Fat Tuesday (Tłusty Wtorek)

Kilka dni temu robiłam zakupy w sklepie spożywczym w pobliżu naszego domu w Brighton, Michigan. Na półkach widziałam wiele pączków -- pysznych, słodkich ciastek wypełnionych dżemem lub kremem. Przypomniało mi się, że na ten tydzień przypada Tłusty Wtorek - ostatni dzień, w którym można pozwolić sobie na takie słodkie przyjemności przed Środą Popielcową. W Ameryce nazywamy tę porę "Lent" - to czas postu i wewnętrznej refleksji poprzedzającej dzień zmartwychwstania Jezusa. Myślę, że w Polsce ten okres czasu nazywany jest Wielkim Postem.

I chociaż jest to czas wielu tradycji i niektóre z nich stają się w Polsce bez znaczenia, to jednak wciąż jest to okres, w którym wielu ludzi myśli więcej o duchowych sprawach. Być może będą się modlić, wyrzekać pewnych rzeczy, rozważać dzielenie się z ubogimi itd. Módlmy się, by tradycje te nabrały nowego znaczenia. Módlmy się, by w tym czasie refleksji i skruchy, ludzie mogli się prawdziwie spotkać z Jezusem. Módlmy się, aby ich serca były prawdziwie poruszone i mogli Go poznać (Ew. Jana 17;3). Módlmy się, by Jezus coraz więcej objawiał się przywódcom KK i wszystkim Polakom. Pamiętajmy, że my --którzy jesteśmy naśladowcami Jezusa -- służymy zmartwychwstałemu Panu i ten sam Duch, który wzbudził Jezusa z martwych, mieszka w nas! (Rzymian 8;11).

Więc, drodzy przyjaciele, czujcie się pokrzepieni. Bądźcie śmiali i odważni. Nasz Bóg jest silny i może zmieniać serca Polaków. Słyszy nasze modlitwy i będzie wierny, jeśli będziemy Mu służyć z oddaniem.

A few days ago I was shopping in a grocery store near our home in Brighton , Michigan. On the shelves I saw several “paczkis” – those delicious sweet pastries filled with jam or custard. I was reminded that this week is “Fat Tuesday,” the last day to indulge in such sweet treats before “Ash Wednesday.” In America we call this season “Lent” - a time of fasting and inner reflection leading up to the day of Jesus’ resurrection. I think in Poland this season is called “Wielki Post.”

Although it is a season of tradition and some of these traditions in Poland may have become meaningless, still it is a time when many people are thinking more about spiritual things.  Perhaps they will pray, make some sacrifices, consider giving to the poor, etc.  Let us pray that this year these traditions will take on new meaning.  Let us pray that during this time of reflection and penitence, people will actually have an encounter with Jesus.  Let us pray that the hearts of the people will be stirred to truly know Him (John 17:3).  Let us pray that Jesus will reveal Himself more and more to the leaders of the Catholic church and to all the people of Poland .  May we who are followers of Jesus be reminded that we serve a risen Lord and that the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead lives in us!  (Romans 8:11)

So, my dear friends, take courage!  Be bold and brave!  God is strong and He is able to change the hearts of the people of Poland .  He hears our prayers and He will be faithful to you as you serve Him in faith.
